Teaching Black Italy - A one-week online professional development course
Date: 2nd week of June, 3rd week of June , 4th week of June
It is a knоwn fact that Blасknеѕѕ in Italy іѕ сurrеntlу undеr-rероrtеd and undеr-аddrеѕѕеd іn vіrtuаllу аll mеdіа and educational circles and many Italian Studies are now committed to diversify their curricula promoting social and racial justice.
Africans have lived in the Italian peninsula for millennia, but the modern Afro-Italian community has rarely been the subject of academic study, either in Italy or abroad. As Black Italian scholar, filmmaker, and storyteller, I hope to change that introducing a one-week online refresher course for faculty's professors, lecturers, PhD Students, developed from years of analysis and observation of the Black Italian Community: Teaching Black Italy
When we talk about Black Italy, we are moving from a mainly immigration-oriented narrative to that of the second generation who are no longer just young people but also adults.
This course seeks both to convey information and to provide an immersive pedagogical experience. Each unit features interdisciplinary elements that expand its appeal to a broad range of fields, responding to the specific needs of the course’s participants. A team of researchers, but also experts and insiders of the Afro-Italian community will offer an informal training environment but, above all, a community of educators who, like AAIS members, care about racial justice and social change, as well as educating new generations.
