    Dear Colleagues,

The George L. Graziadio Center for Italian Studies commemorates the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri with a talk by Dr. Alessandro Vettori: “Exiled Poets in Dante’s Commedia”, Thursday, March 25th at 2:00 PM.

Exile determined the poet’s existential crisis and is reflected in the pilgrim’s adventurous journey through the three kingdoms of the afterworld. In the Comedy, Dante is constantly lost and out of place. The connection between displacement and literary creativity is allegorized in the portrayal of several poets (e.g. Brunetto Latini), but also finds expression in tropes and images throughout the narratives depicting fellow poets or describing poetics. The desire for nostos, the return to the ideal—and idealized—location of home or patria, inspires a poetics of exile as connected to dislocation and movement in Cantos 21 to 26 of Purgatorio.
