In the last two decades, television underwent significant technological and industrial changes that altered many of its features. As of today, TV is no longer a mere broadcasting medium but it has expanded thanks to new digital platforms. Such evolution has triggered new scholarly interest in Italian television on the part of both Italian and international scholars. High quality Italian TV series (such as Gomorrah, Suburra, My Brilliant Friend, Skam Italia, Zero etc.) are widely investigated in their cultural, aesthetic, and industrial traits. Similarly, audiovisual platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and RaiPlay make important Italian TV shows and films of the present and the past available for new spectators and scholars.
This panel seeks to explore the field of Italian television in a broad spectrum, with particular attention to television industry, historiography, aesthetics, and culture. Papers that consider old and new TV series, transnational TV, authors, networks aesthetics, programming style, industrial strategies, reception, archives, new audiovisual platforms, and interrelations with other media and discourses, among other topics, are welcome.
